My initial idea was to come up with a plan for an annual summer music festival at the Angels Gate Amphitheater in San Pedro, CA. Some buddies of mine (Vince La Farga & crew) did a one-off day show there with multiple bands maybe a year before which gave me confidence that it was possible. This is the same amphitheater where the MINUTEMEN played their last San Pedro (California) show back on November 16, 1985. fIREHOSE also played their first show here on my 18th birthday, June 14, 1986. I can’t recall how or why this happened, but a friend of mine named Eric Smith partnered up with me on this production. I came up with the name of the event which was, A WAILING OF A TOWN “Angels Gate All Day Music Fuss.” I later used A Wailing of a Town for the title of a book I self-published back in 2015 on the history of early San Pedro punk (1977-1985). Eric and I had to meet with the Angels Gate brass and jump through various hoops to get this happening. The flyer says S.A.D. and Recess Records presents on top. S.A.D. was a cassette label of mine so I just used that as a production name for this one and added Recess Records (with Todd’s permission) to add some extra clout to the event. Lots of businesses’ from town came through with sponsorship money so we were able to pay for all the expenses which came out to a little over $1,600. The town rag, Random Lengths gave us a free ad in their paper. We even had to pay for security for the event and rent portable toilets. We paid for both in advance and the couple of security guards we rented never showed up to the event. I don’t recall anyone from Angels Gate being present at the event, so it didn’t make a difference (yes, we got our money back). We policed the event ourselves which was easy since we knew mostly everyone who attended. There was supposed to be no alcohol, but this was a Pedro (B.Y.O.) event, you know — keep it on the down low. Greg Cameron (The Nazi Sex Doctor) did the sound (Cameron Pro Audio) which worked out great. The music fest was a big success and all the bands were great. My girlfriend (at the time), Haydee Del Valle agreed to help out the following year and take on some of the duties of the fest. When we went to meet with Angels Gate the following year, they raised the price so high to rent the amphitheater that it was unsurmountable and so we had to throw in the towel. Sucks, ’cause Mike Watt and George Hurley had agreed to play MINUTEMEN songs at the next one ...
