This was Robert's first solo photography show, thanks to Jim Ritson, owner of 4th Street Vine in Long Beach, CA. The exhibit was titled: SNAP! and was up from January 20th to March 17, 2018. Photozine designed by younger brother, Craig Ibarra who also curated the exhibit.

To shoot live band photos is a labor of love – love for the music, and a way to participate in the music scene (similar to my experiences making art for bands). As a fan and often as a friend of bands, we are there already, but at some point it becomes documentation. We do so much of it that it becomes a body of work, and if you’re lucky, it’s decent.

Robert Ibarra has been creating this body of work for longer than I was aware of. Before the digital era, he was shooting photos of bands in backyards as well as of friends skating. He wasn’t shooting bands simply because they were important or would somehow make him more relevant — he was shooting what he liked. It seems like, in the digital age, he went into overdrive, always experimenting and pushing the camera and software to see what it could do for him. Cameras and filters are reduced to secondary tools, but a machine alone can only do so much. It needs to be pointed and shot at the right time. The photographer has to be on his own, understanding and concentrating on what exactly is going on. It takes practice to get to the point where you can quickly evaluate the scene and decide what it is you might catch.

In color or in black and white, he captures the heat of the live performance. The photos are well-crafted, exciting, and never static like live shots can be. Clean and clear is part of his style. He shoots what you didn’t see even when you experienced it too. The photos go beyond documentation because you can hear the images.

You often hear of a photographer’s “great eye.” Robert has trained his eye and waits patiently for the split second to get the image he sees in his head. Many of his shots have already become iconic, and it’s easy to predict much of his most recent work will as well.
