THE RISE AND THE FALL / ISSUE 9
January-April 2007

This one includes an awesome piece on artist Shawn Kerri, a really influential artist to me and we also used her art for the cover of this one. Christian Moreno has breakfast with Keith Morris and grilles him with tons of questions, old and new. A short interview with Chuck from Bullet Treatment. Bradley Williams interviews Shakey Bones. El Beardo’s “State Of The Skate.” A “Pedro Art Damage” feature on artist Chet Zar. New bands in town include Epic Debauchery, The Grimes and Sleepover. Pedro Bob gives us the skinny on Royal Palms. A Cool Scott Aicher comic titled “Chicks at Work.” Four-page collage of Shanty Cheryl’s live shots from various Pedro gigs. Tito reviews two different Pronto’s Restaurants in town. Two small memorials for Gabby Mantini and Mike Webber. Vinnie Vegas reviews five zines for ya. Some righteous Bukowski poems, lots of reviews in this one and tons of Shawn Kerri art, which even includes a flip book of her (Circle Jerks) skank guy … well, sort of.

THE RISE AND THE FALL / ISSUE 10
May 2007

The cover photo was taken by the late photographer Naomi Petersen. I had a chance to work with Naomi for a short time at SST Records; she was one of the coolest people that I met there. This one features a rare interview with drummer George Hurley about everything you wanted to know and then some. An interview with The Underground Railroad to Candyland that actually also made it in Thrasher Magazine, but this is the entire interview and not the cut-up version. Christian Moreno interviews QUI with lots of smart-ass remarks from one David Yow (Scratch Acid, the Jesus Lizard). Halbadal takes a trip to Orange County and wings an interview with Drinkers Purgatory. Ian Vanek (Japanther, 99mm) interrogates Matt and Kim. A Victor Sedillo spread of awesome 1979-1980 early punk photos. “El Beardo’s Skate Chronicles” includes his usual, awesome, photo work. A “Pedro Art Damage” feature on artist Tom Berg. Two new “New Bands in Town” include SS Fun and The Shoplifters. More wackiness by Scott Aicher. Some great Shanty Cheryl photos from various Pedro gigs. Tito’s on the fly thanksgiving story. Pedro Bob tells us about the early history of our town. A badass centerfold of Yamo blazing at the ‘dale. Bukowski poems, busted domes, much reviews, paying our dues …

THE RISE AND THE FALL / ISSUE 11
December 2007

Aaron White talked me into this two-color cover that turned out great – thanks Aaron. Justin Pearson from the Locust answers some questions via e-mail. Joel Morales from Dios Malos deals with interviewer Jed Schipper without totally losing his cool. The Spits for dummies thingamajig. Thee Halbadal spends an afternoon with Thee Makeout Party. More haps on the Channel Street skatepark. Ian from Japanther sent me a two-page graffiti spread, you’ll see. “New Bands in Town” include The Bible Children, No Ma’am and Destroy L.A. Pedro Bob gives his take on “gentrification” in Pedro. Tito has his review of the Brite Spot Mexican restaurant and dealings with Vinnie Vegas. A cool photo spread by Shanty Cheryl documenting some Pedro gigs. A comic by Scott Aicher called “True Tales of an Eight Grade Aicher.” A rare comic panel by Victor Gastelum titled “Police Navidad.” A Robert Russo centerfold. Poems by Hank, plus more reviews than you could shake a stick at.

THE RISE AND THE FALL / ISSUE 12
January 2009

Victor Gastelum did the cover art for this issue, and no, that is not Damian Franko on the cover. Pedro Bob helped out with the layout on this one. Ian MacKaye came to Pedro (with help from the Rise and Fall) and did a question and answer gig at Sunken City Skates. We took two of the stories that he told that night for this issue. One story is a detailed account of the Teen Idles’ sketchy trip to California, the other is about when FEAR played on Saturday Night Live and Lorne Michaels asked Ian to bring “real punks” to the taping. Both are great stories. Halbadal sits down with beer and raps with Brian Brannon of JFA about … you guessed it, “skate shit.” A smarty pants interview with Triclops! that will make you feel kinda dumb. A “Pedro Art Damage” feature on artist Shanty Cheryl, nice shots. Vinnie Vegas brings back the “Pedro Heads” section and this time it’s Frankie “Ha-Ha” Lipanovich ... LOL. Kelly K.O. gives her opinion on the Barack Obama, John McCain election. El Beardo gives us an update on the Channel Street skatepark. “New Bands in Town” are Absorbing Jr., Black Sparrow Press, Solamusica and Sonadora, brought to you by Coco Chappelle. A kooky comic piece by Scott Aicher called “Everyday Heroes.” Tito has some things to say about the Pacific Diner. More Bukowski poems, more reviews, more everything.

Frank Lipanovich (RIP)
